We are retirees (social worker and teacher) who are looking for adventure. We enjoy travel and seeing new places. Tricia has family and friends in England and Canada where she lived for many years at various times. Joe has an Italian background, his parents both originated from Lipari (the largest of the Aeolian Islands) . We would both love to return to Italy explore further but we will consider any destination in the northern hemisphere, especially Vancouver BC and anywhere in the UK. When we are at home Tricia is a mad patch-worker (the quilting is done by someone else) and Joe aims to write a family history.

Description of the home we are offering for exchange
Our house was built in the 1890's. It retains many period features and has a cosy traditional feeling but with modern conveniences. There is hydronic central heating in all rooms and reverse cycle air conditioning in most. Kitchen has all equipment; large stove, lots of freezer space. One bathroom has a large two-person bath whilst the other has an open shower with shower stool. Small and easily maintained garden with outdoor eating areas. In 2018 we established a Street Library which proved to be highly popular during our lockdowns. The house is 1km from Ballarat city centre.100Km from Melbourne with hourly train service. Many attractions nearby, all amenities are available in this Gold Rush city renowned for its Victorian architectural heritage

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area
Although we live on a main street the neighbourhood is very quiet. Next door to our house is a very large fruit and vegetable shop where they have fresh produce at refreshingly low prices. Across the road is a Post Office and around the corner there is a bakery, a hairdresser and a pizza shop. Churches and the closest supermarket are all within easy walking distance. Bus stops are very close by. There is easy walking along the Yarrowee River for a short stroll.

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home
Ballarat is a city in the Central Highlands of Victoria, Australia. Our house is within easy walking distance of the city centre. There you will find vibrant cafes and bars, shopping, art gallery and the train station. There are many attractions in Ballarat the major one being Sovereign Hill which is an open air museum built on an original mining site, showing life in the gold rush era. Buses will take you to small towns nearby such as Buninyong (where you will find the best apple turnovers in the world) and Creswick (home of Creswick Woollen Mills where gorgeous woollen articles can be purchased) and Clunes (plenty of interesting shops of all types, gallery, cafes and restaurants, site of the annual Book Fair). Trains can take you further afield to places like Maryborough (Central Goldfields), Geelong (Bellarine Peninsular), or Ararat (Grampians), all of which have an interesting history and plenty to explore. If you are really intrepid you can plan a trip to Victoria's snow fields, there are several; see https://www.beechworth.com/nearby_towns/victoria_snowfields.html. Make sure that you take all the recommended gear for snow conditions.

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules
You can be confident that we will look after your home during our stay. We have previously rented out homes and been heart-broken at the state they have been left in. This will not happen to you.
We'd like to return to a clean and tidy house please. We do not use chemicals to clean the house, we use ENJO cloths and products.
Please do not smoke in the house, both of us have respiratory problems and stale smoke lingers.
One room may be locked - the bedroom Joe currently uses as his study/office.
It may be possible to negotiate the use of Tricia's studio which has facilities for additional guests - bed/bathroom/kitchenette. During a non-simultaneous exchange we would live there.
The house is on a main road and is not set up for young children. Very young babies (bring your own cot) and older teens who are able to explore independently are welcome.
